Methane is a readily available resource, though its direct conversion into value-added products is hampered by its kinetic inertness. Halogen-mediated functionalization is an effective route to activate one C−H bond yielding methyl halide (CH3X, X = Cl, Br), a reactive platform chemical for the manufacture of liquid fuels and polymers. One of the main drawbacks of this process is the formation of ployhalogenated byproducts, particularly CH2X2. In this regard, together with Vera I am working on the rational design of nanostructured catalysts for the selective hydrodebromination of CH2Br2 to CH3Br. In addition, I collaborate with Sharon on the mechanistic understanding and the performance optimization of CH3Cl coupling catalyzed by zeolites, a promising technology for CH3Cl upgrading to olefins and aromatics.
